Writer, born in London, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and was a member of the Bloomsbury Group. His works include Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905), The Longest Journey (1907), A Room with a View (1908), and Howard’s End (1910). His masterpiece, A Passage to India (1924), paints a picture of society in India under the British Raj and explores the nature of external and internal reality. In 1951 he collaborated with Eric Crozier (1914-94) on the libretto of Britten’s opera, Billy Budd. His novel Maurice (written 1913-14), on the theme of homosexuality, was published posthumously in 1971. Film versions of his novels have been very successful. He left much of his estate, including the copyright to his works, to Kings College, Cambridge.
