His works include Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905), The Longest Journey (1907), A Room with a View (1908), and Howard’s End (1910). His masterpiece, A Passage to India (1924), paints a picture of society in India under the British Raj and explores the nature of external and internal reality. He also wrote several volumes of essays and short stories.

In 1951 he collaborated with Eric Crozier (1914-94) on the libretto of Britten’s opera, Billy Budd.
