About Jarkko
Left-handed, Jarkko Nieminen was born on 23rd July 1981 in Masku, Finland. “Jakke”, as he is known by friends and family, began playing tennis at the age of 4. His parents, Kauko and Leena, are chemists, and his only sibling, older sister Anna, is an editor. Jarkko counts Iceland as his favourite vacation spot and enjoys watching hockey and football. His club of choice happens to be Manchester United. His most unforgettable moment in sporting history is Finland’s World Championship in hockey in 1995.
Jarkko As A Junior
His tennis career as a junior was held up as one full of promise, he defeated Kristian Pless of Denmark to win his first junior Grand Slam, the U.S. Open,in 1999. He was also a finalist at the Luxembourg junior event in the same year. Nieminen finished that year at no. 9 in the world junior rankings.
Career Highlights
Jarkko Nieminen made his Davis Cup debut in 1999 against Italy, losing to Andrea Gaudenzi. He won his first Davis Cup match in 2000, beating Mikael Tillstrom of Sweden in a dead rubber. Nieminen turned pro in 2000.
He finished in the Top 100 for the first time in 2001 after solid Challenger play and became the first Finn to reach an ATP final since Leo Palin in Sofia in December 1981. Nieminen posted a 38-12 Challenger record, winning 4 titles – Wolfsburg, Tampere, Cordoba and Maia. He had an outstanding week in Stockholm where he qualified into the main draw, beat Pless, Younes El Aynaoui, defending champion Thomas Johansson and three-time winner Thomas Enqvist before losing to Sjeng Schalken in five sets.
In 2002, he became the first player from Finland to break into the top 50. He reached the finals at Estoril and Mallorca before losing to David Nalbandian and Gaston Gaudio repsectively.
The steady improvement continued in 2003 where he was ranked inside the top 40 of the ATP rankings. He won 41 matches, a personal best, and reached his fourth career ATP final. He reached the third round at the Australian Open and and the semi final in Milan. In the same year he advanced to the fourth round at Roland Garros, losing to Fernando Gonzalez. At the U.S. Open, he lost a tightly contested match to Nalbandian 7-6 in the fifth set.
In 2004 Finland’s top tennis player finished in the top 100 for the fourth consecutive year despite missing nearly 3 months due to injury. He defeated Nicolas Massu in the first round of the Australian Open before losing to eventual finalist Marat Safin in the second round. He represented Finland at the Athens Olympics, losing to Max Mirnyi in the second round. In his third appearance at the U.S. Open Nieminen lost in the first round to Andrei Pavel of Romania.Two weeks later he advanced to the semifinal in Beijing, defeating Taylor Dent and Nalbandian before losing to eventual champion Safin.
In 2005, Jarkko Nieminen won the title at Prostejov and was a semifinalist at Stuttgart, Munich and Bangkok. He also reached the doubles semifinal at Munich, with Rainer Schuettler of Germany.
Nieminen was defeated in five sets by Lleyton Hewitt in the quarter-finals of the 2005 U.S. Open, having become the first Finn to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final.
His career high Indesit ATP entry ranking has been World No. 27, which he reached in 2003. He is currently ranked at 30th place in the Indesit ATP race.
