Kara Marie Lawson (born February 14, 1981 in Alexandria, Virginia) is a professional basketball player for the Sacramento Monarchs in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She plays the position of Guard. Early Years
She grew up around the Washington, DC area, and played as a running back and linebacker against boys in the Fairfax County Football League, a youth football league.
She attended West Springfield High School, and played on the women’s basketball and soccer teams.
University of Tennessee
Going against her father’s wishes that she should enroll in Stanford University, Lawson attended the University of Tennessee (UT), and played for The Lady Vols basketball team, coached by Pat Summitt.
She enrolled in UT’s College of Business. She graduated in 2003.
WNBA Career
On April 24, 2003, Lawson was originally selected by the Detroit Shock in the first round (fifth overall) during the annual WNBA Draft. But five days later, the Shock traded Lawson to the Sacramento Monarchs in exchange for Kedra Holland-Corn and a 2004 second-round draft pick.
Off-Season Activities
In recent years during the WNBA off-season, Lawson has been involved in sports broadcasting and law school.
In March 2004, Lawson won a position on ESPN’s show Dream Job, doing commentary of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament. She has since made several appearances doing broadcast commentaries during college women’s basketball games as well as the Sacramento Kings games.
At the same time, she was studying for the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test).
